Ewan MacColl, came to Dublin to Support the Henry Street, Dunne's Stores Workers. Mary Manning, from Kilmainham in Dublin was suspended by management on 19th July 1984 after she refused to sell fruit from then Apartheid South Africa.
Ewan MacColl said that in his history of workers struggles he never came across such selfless action by a worker, who had absolutely nothing to gain personally by her action, but did this to improve the lot of people from another continent.
Mary was joined later by another 9 women equally self-less and a single man. Ewan wrote a song for them which he performed on the night called "Ten young Women and one young Man!" to the tune of the Dublin song "Spanish Lady".
